Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve
The Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve is engineered to handle challenging media, such as abrasive slurries, viscous fluids, and solid-laden liquids, providing reliable shutoff and flow control. With its sharp-edged gate design, this valve can easily slice through thick and solid materials, making it ideal for applications where efficient isolation is required. The valve is pneumatically actuated for quick and precise operation, making it a perfect choice for automated and remote-controlled systems in industries such as wastewater treatment, mining, pulp and paper, and chemical processing. Available in sizes up to DN1200, this valve is built for large-scale operations and is capable...

Product Overview
The Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve is a knife‑edge gate valve driven by a pneumatic actuator. It is designed only for ON‑OFF (open/close) service – not for flow regulation. Compared with manual or electric knife gate valves, the pneumatic version offers fast response, excellent explosion‑proof performance, and remote centralized control. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring frequent cycling, high explosion‑proof requirements, or locations without electrical power.
The sharp knife‑edge gate cuts through hanging fibers, paper, plastic strips, and other materials during closure, preventing clogging. The body flow path has no recesses, providing self‑cleaning action. The valve has flanged connections, with nominal diameters from DN50 to DN600, pressure ratings PN10/PN16 (Class 150), and body materials including cast iron, carbon steel, and stainless steel. The pneumatic actuator can be equipped with accessories such as solenoid valves, limit switches, and air filter regulators.
Product Structure
The Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve mainly consists of the pneumatic actuator (ON‑OFF type) and the valve body assembly.
Pneumatic Actuator (ON‑OFF Type):
-
Cylinder: Single‑acting (spring return) or double‑acting cylinder providing thrust to move the gate up and down.
-
Piston and Seals: High‑strength aluminum alloy or stainless steel piston with wear‑resistant seals.
-
Air Ports: Standard G1/4″, G1/2″ or NPT threads for connection to the air supply line.
-
Solenoid Valve: Controls air flow to and from the cylinder to open or close the valve. Available in single‑ or double‑solenoid, explosion‑proof or general‑purpose types.
-
Limit Switches: Provide fully open/fully closed position feedback. Available in mechanical or proximity (NAMUR) types.
-
Air Filter Regulator: Filters and regulates the air supply pressure to protect the actuator.
-
Manual Override: Some models are equipped with a handwheel or manual lever for operation during air supply failure.
-
Quick Exhaust Valve (optional): Increases closing speed.
Valve Body Assembly:
-
Body: Cast or fabricated body in gray cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel (WCB), stainless steel (CF8/CF8M), etc. Flanged ends conforming to GB/T 9113, ANSI B16.5, EN 1092‑1, etc. Full‑bore flow path with no recesses.
-
Gate: Stainless steel (304, 316, 310S) knife‑edge gate with a sharp edge to cut through fibers and particles. The gate surface can be hardfaced with Stellite or chrome‑plated.
-
Seats: Available in rubber (EPDM, NBR, FKM), PTFE, or metal sealing; bidirectional sealing optional.
-
Stem: Stainless steel stem connected to the cylinder piston rod, moving the gate up and down.
-
Packing Box: Contains PTFE or flexible graphite packing, compressed by a packing gland to prevent external leakage.
-
Yoke: Connects the body to the cylinder.
The pneumatic actuator provides fast response (typically 0.5–3 seconds), making it suitable for high‑cycle applications.
Function
-
Pneumatic Fast Operation: The cylinder drives the gate to open or close quickly, with short response time – ideal for automated processes requiring frequent cycling.
-
Explosion‑Proof Safety: The pneumatic system has no electrical sparks. When equipped with explosion‑proof solenoid valves and limit switches, it can be safely used in flammable/explosive environments.
-
Remote Centralized Control: The solenoid valve receives ON‑OFF signals from DCS or PLC, enabling remote automatic control without on‑site manual intervention.
-
Knife‑Edge Cutting Function: The sharp gate edge cuts through hanging fibers, paper, plastic strips, and other materials during closure, preventing clogging.
-
Self‑Cleaning Flow Path: The recess‑free flow path allows media to flush the interior when fully open, preventing solids accumulation.
-
Bidirectional Sealing (optional): Bidirectional floating seats or double‑sided sealing allow the valve to withstand media pressure from either direction.
-
Full‑Bore Low Flow Resistance: When fully open, the gate is completely out of the flow path, providing minimal pressure loss.
-
Manual Emergency Operation: A handwheel or manual lever allows valve operation during air supply failure.
-
Speed Adjustment: Speed control valves on the cylinder ports allow adjustment of gate speed to reduce water hammer or impact.
Working Conditions
-
Applicable Media: Sewage, sludge, pulp, slurry, tailings, coal slurry, ash slag, mud, particle‑laden liquids, etc.
-
Temperature Range: –20°C to +200°C (PTFE seats); –20°C to +80°C (rubber seats); –29°C to +550°C (metal seats).
-
Pressure Rating: PN10, PN16 (Class 150); higher ratings available on request.
-
Nominal Diameter: DN50 – DN600 (2″ – 24″); larger sizes available on request.
-
Air Supply Pressure: 0.4–0.8 MPa (standard 0.5–0.6 MPa).
-
Air Supply Medium: Compressed air, nitrogen (dry, oil‑free, filtered).
-
Installation Orientation: Vertical stem‑up recommended.
-

Summary
The Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve, with its advantages of pneumatic fast response, explosion‑proof safety, remote automatic control, and knife‑edge cutting function, is an ideal shut‑off valve for automated pipelines handling sewage, pulp, slurry, chemical slurries, and similar media. Compared with electric knife gate valves, the pneumatic version is safer in explosive atmospheres and offers faster response.
Compared with hydraulic knife gate valves, the pneumatic system is cleaner and easier to maintain. With flanged connections, a full‑bore flow path, and optional solenoid valves, limit switches, and other accessories, it integrates seamlessly with DCS/PLC systems. For pipeline systems that require automatic ON‑OFF control, frequent cycling, or explosion protection, the Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve is an efficient, safe, and economical solution.
